It started with a tamper. In 2002, Bruce Constantine and Chris McLean met over coffee to try to resolve a common barista problem: designing a tamper that ""clicked"" at the ideal 30 pounds of force. The solution seemed simple enough. The pair sketched out the basics of the Calibrated Tamper on the back of a napkin. The sketch touched off a 2-year-long journey that culminated in the Calibrated Tamper, Espro's first product, introduced in 2004. The journey also raised many more problems in search of solutions, as well as the will and the creativity to seek out those solutions and make them happen. Espro's goal is summed up in the fourth point of the company's 5-point manifesto: Our coffee equipment should work and be easy to learn, teach and use. Creating perfect coffee drinks requires both art and science. To that end, Espro's founders have made it their mission to create equipment that handles the science so that you can focus on the art. Their coffee-making tools are designed with scientific questions in mind--how to keep coffee at the right temperature, what it takes to remove the mud from press coffee, how to let a barista know when they've tamped the espresso perfectly--and deliver the answers through meticulously designed and exquisitely crafted equipment that ensure brewing coffee will be the true pleasure it was always meant to be.
